If the State of Nature (which even amongst the proponents of the social contract, was admitted to have existed) were at any time, a reality then its essential brutishness would make it unlivable. Would a simple enforcement of contract and property rights really be adequate to address a social landscape characterized by constant anarchy and warfare?
